How to Sell Products From Instagram DMs

The follower asking "how much?" in your comments is one extra tap away from buying, if the next thing that happens is a product card in their DMs instead of a link they have to go find themselves.

How to Sell Products From Instagram DMs

Someone comments "how much is this?" under a product post and gets a DM back, but the conversation often stops there. A product card can take them from that DM to the relevant checkout page in one tap. That shorter path is worth testing, especially when the question shows buying intent.

What a product carousel in a DM actually is

Instead of a plain text link, an automation can send a browsable carousel of product cards with images and prices. People can scroll through the products in the DM, then tap a card to open checkout outside Instagram. Build it like any comment-to-DM automation: choose a trigger, such as a comment keyword, story reply, or incoming DM, then select one or more products from your store to send. Product cards require a plan and payment setup that support the store.

Why "your own checkout" is the actual point

When a card opens knit.bio checkout, the buyer pays through the payment account you connected. knit.bio charges no platform commission; your provider may charge processing fees. Checkout opens from the DM, so test the full path on a phone before telling followers what to expect.

How the purchase gets credited back to the DM

Each knit.bio checkout link from a product DM carries a signed reference to the conversation. When a buyer completes that checkout, the order can be attributed to the automation and contact that sent the link. A forwarded link may still carry the original reference, so treat this as an attribution signal rather than proof of who personally decided to buy. External payment links such as PayPal.Me and UPI do not pass through this checkout and cannot provide the same order attribution.

What happens after the purchase

For a paid digital product, knit.bio attempts to send a download link back to the DM thread. That message can fail if the account disconnects or Instagram's messaging window has closed. The checkout success page and email remain the dependable delivery paths, so verify both with a test order.

Where this fits with the rest of your automations

A product carousel is another reply type in the same automation builder used for comment-to-DM flows. The trigger logic, including keyword matching, follower gates, and email capture, works the same whether the reply is a link, file, or carousel. If you haven't built a comment-to-DM automation before, our guide to turning comments into DMs covers the basics.

Getting started

  1. Make sure your store has at least one product ready to sell.
  2. Build an automation, and instead of a plain link, choose "Product" (or select multiple for a carousel) as the reply.
  3. Test it first. Comment with your trigger keyword and confirm the carousel and checkout work end to end.

knit.bio's IG Suite can send a product card in a DM that opens your connected checkout, with no knit.bio platform commission. See how it works, or start with a page.
